I often get asked what makes De Alma different from other makers. I find this a somewhat difficult question to answer at times. I usually say we are a custom house for any design you envision, but what does that mean? To me, it means it is unique to each individual person's design vision, but when you go into the terms handmade, custom made, and made to order, they are relevant to all other makers. So, what is the meaning of handmade, custom-made, and made-to-order, and what makes it unique to De Alma and our process?
Handmade is exactly as it implies, built and assembled by the artisan's hands. Though I believe that this is what handmade means, the term Handmade has evolved to include other areas of mass-produced pieces that are, as they say, handmade solely for the reason that they are assembled by hand. The artist's unique skills are no longer considered and make handmade readily available to any piece that has been assembled, vs. the art that goes into making a unique piece by hand from beginning to end.
What I describe as custom-made is made to the client's specifications by talented craftsmen. The client has the option to choose the size, style, finish/stain, and wood/material they want for their handmade item. Mass-produced items can now be customized by changing a color or choosing materials, which is also called custom-made.
Made to Order is a luxury piece exclusive to the client's specifications, and made once all the details have come together to make it unique and one-of-a-kind. Despite my belief that Handmade, Custom Made, and Made to Order are used accurately by any maker that uses them for their branding, I believe that De Alma is true to the meaning of all three. Each piece we make is a work of art that we take pride in, and it is truly unique to each individual. It is all handmade, custom-made, and made-to-order by talented artists who put their heart and soul into each unique piece.
